Bronner Bros Summer 2008

I'm slackin' fam. I was supposed to been posted this up but I been busy. The Bronner Bros hairshow was cool. I was working the Ford Flex promo so I didn't get to see or do much other than that. But Thelma from Good Times was there as well as Sean Garrett, Nathaniel Bronner, Mari Morrow, Jennifer Hudson, Ne-Yo, Adele Givens and others. Here are some pics I did get a chance to take.

Awww Garrett's Popcorn

The Senor Kaos made a trip to NY and bought me back some Garrett's popcorn (they opened a joint in New York?) as a birthday gift. (I think he was trying to squash beef for not snatching those HUF's up for me in San Fran)
Before I broke the seal

The kids smashed this joint!

The Good Deacon

Napoleon Hill Talks About Andrew Carnegie

I kind of wonder from time to time why there is such an opposition to Christians living an abundant life. If you like at how the earth is laid out, the description of heaven or any of the 66 books of the bible I believe you read a love letter written by a loving Father who wants the very best for His children. How much more can we impact humanity if we were living an abundant life supplied by OUR FATHER! Abundant love, joy, money, WISDOM, knowledge, understanding, etc.?

The Secret

If you pay attention to what they're saying, there is a ton of biblical principles and foundational truths presented here. I saw this in a leadership class I'm taking and was floored because it sounded like something Pastor taught years ago! What do you think?

Foot Fetish: Adidas Gil Zero II x Slam

( Quote from: SLAM by Lang Whitaker)
Late last summer, adidas approached SLAM on behalf of Gilbert Arenas. Adidas was preparing a big campaign for the 2007-08 season relating to Gilbert, commissioning 20 different styles of the Gil II Zero shoe. Gil and adidas were asking 20 companies that Gil worked with or admired — from Bungie Software to Benihana (Hibachi!) to SLAM — to come up with a version of the Gil II Zero that reflected their connection to and interpretation of Gil (you can see some of the other shoes here). So the SLAM crew went to the lab.
As well as all of us at SLAM get along, we all have a very different style aesthetic. So to settle how we’d design a shoe, we held a contest. Ben, Khalid and I each designed what we felt the shoe should be and then took a vote around the office. Khalid worked with Melissa, our creative director, and they came up with a shoe that would have looked great with jeans and a sweater, a conservative look that was mostly gray, white and red. Ben also worked with Melissa, and they designed a shoe made of pebbled basketball leather with gold highlights. Their design actually won the straw poll, but then we found out we couldn’t get the correct type of leather in time.

So as it turned out, along with our art director Stephen Goggi, I was a part of the winning design, which you’re seeing here for the first time in the world (it’s also featured in the upcoming SLAM issue 121).Go ahead, shake your head, say the shoe doesn’t make sense, that it’s too loud, too strange, that you’ve never seen anything quite like it before.

And then remember who the shoe was made for. From the start, Stephen and I wanted the shoe to reflect what Gilbert meant to us, as one of the most dynamic, hilarious, puzzling personalities in the NBA. And above all else, we wanted our shoe to be fun, and we tried to keep that in mind throughout the design process.

We started with the colors. We got out the Wizards media guide and looked up their actual colors, then tried to imagine those colors as interpreted by a set of highlight markers. Before he spent the season injured, Gil was supposed to wear the shoes in a game, so we at least wanted him to not get fined. (Not much, at least.)

Steve and I went with black as the background color, then orange patent leather around the front, on the back and on thestrap across the front (with SLAM embossed). With the remaining panels, we thought it would be cool to do something tiger-related, since Gil had been on our cover shirtless, displaying his garish tiger tattoo. So Steve went and found the original photos from the shoot, and then he lifted Gil’s actual tattoo from the images and we put his actual tattoo pattern on the shoe (on blue horsehair, no less).

We were running out of space but still had ideas. On the insole we wrote SLAMonline.com. On the heel of the shoe, in small letters, we had “MY SWAG WAS PHENOMENAL.” embossed into it. On top of the tongue, on the little thingy the laces go through (that’s technical talk for ya), we put Gil’s Agent Zero logo. Underneath the tongue, we put Gil’s autograph. There was just one more thing we wanted to utilize, and we had the perfect place: We made the sole out of transparent rubber, and then put Gil’s actual SLAM cover underneath it. You don’t see it when the shoe is at rest, but when you find it, it looks, well, phenomenal.

Save Our Sphere

We need your help.
I've been blessed to see Sphere of Hip-Hop flourish in the last 11 years.Maybe you have too. Looking forward, I am aware of the challenges of "doingwhat we do" here with the Sphere website family and of course all of thethings we're doing offline as well.
Believe it or not, Sphere of Hip-Hop is more than just a website. We'vebecome something that affects change and also gives hope to many across theglobe. Lives touched and hearts changed. We're blessed to be a blessing forsure!
With that said, we need your help. We need help in catching up past debtthat has piled up from 2005-2007. We also need help staying on pace forthis year as well. During the months of January, February and March weactually came pretty close to breaking even having only come up about $300short. The next three months were quite a bit more challenging however.April - June tend to be the most challenging months of the year due toseveral yearly expenses coming due. We came up short to the tune of$1,720.50. July started off strong and went out with a whimper. We fell$341.12 short.
Our fixed operating costs figure to $903 monthly. That covers the basicneeds and costs in operating the site including (but not limited to):phone, internet, web hosting, postage, shipping supplies, storage space, digital download services, shopping cart capabilities, supplies (printerink, paper, labels, tape etc) and other odds & ends. Some months that totalcan grow anywhere from $100-500 based on different activities we're workingon. Flyer orders, software needs etc come up irregularly throughout theyear. Please consider helping Sphere out in any way and in any amount you can.
Please also consider sponsoring a particular need we have. The goal isalways to simply break even and use any profit to bless others throughseveral offline ministry opportunities we assist with. Remember that nobodyis drawing any sort of salary... everyone (myself included) donates all oftheir time.
If you would like more information to feel comfortable supporting, pleasehit me up privately and I'll be able to help. I am ready to be creative inany way so we can get this debt paid off in quick fashion. Let me know ifyou have an idea!
God bless,

Edwin Hawkins - Oh Happy Day

Give Us Apology

All Hip Hop.com is reporting that 3 days ago the House of Representatives led by Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, “issued a formal apology to African Americans for the atrocities committed against them and their ancestors during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and Jim Crow segregation laws.”

“It’s just another statement that America is changing,” Simmons told AllHipHop.com. “It has changed enough to accept the fact that it is impossible to fully heal without acknowledging the past.”

Killer Mike had this to say:

“When they start talking about reparations, let’s not make it about the money,” outspoken rapper Killer Mike told AllHipHop.com. “Let’s make it education based. I think every Black person in America should be able to go to college for free. I think they should have eight years to go after their Bachelor’s, Master’s, whatever they can get in those 8 years. And the reason why I say 8 is that some of those people are gonna be single parents [for example], and so I think they should have twice the amount of time the average kid in college takes. And for those people that’s too old or already got a degree, they should get a tax break for a certain amount of years.”

Immortal Technique added this:

“I believe that this apology is way over due and it was just done strategically at a time when Congress is at an incredibly low approval rating,” Immortal Technique told AllHipHop.com. “I think its a step in the right direction, but since slavery without a doubt built up the capital for capitalism, there needs to be a discussion in Congress about some sort of reparations. That and the social, religious and educational mechanisms that facilitated the justification for slavery and the modern form of racism, that was born from it.”
